Two Nutrition, Family and Consumer Studies students from the University – Ruby Bartolo and Rebecca Camilleri – placed second and third in the PERL 2011 international Student Essay Competition.
First place went to Danish Khan from the NED University of Engineering and Technology in Pakistan.
The theme of the competition was ‘Can You Imagine A More Sustainable Lifestyle?’
Entries were submitted from Ireland, India, Japan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malta, Mauritius, Pakistan, Panama, Romania, South Korea, Tanzania and Turkey.
The Maltese students wrote about current trends in food, nutrition and health, family living and resource management in Malta, and the role of home economics and textiles studies teachers in educating for an improved sustainable lifestyle.
They focused on various topics such as organic farming, seasonality, choice and care of clothing, community hygiene and alternative transport.
