Couple’s lucky escape as car rolls into sea

A couple managed to escape from a car unharmed as it rolled into the sea in Ta’ Xbiex in the early hours of yesterday morning, police said.

The man, aged 39, and the woman, 23, are believed to have escaped from the windows of a Nissan Qashqai as the vehicle hit the water, where it floated for a few seconds before sinking.

The driver told police the car plunged into the sea as he attempted to start the engine.

The incident happened at about 2.30 a.m. near the Black Pearl restaurant, a popular spot for couples.

Police were called to the scene while Civil Protection Department divers inspected the vehicle to ensure no one else was inside.
