More than one hundred Islamic extremists rallied outside the US embassy in London yesterday to vent their fury at Washington over the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Police had to separate the group from supporters of the far-right English Defence League (EDL) who held a rival protest praising the US actions in shooting dead the Al-Qaeda leader in Pakistan.

The bin Laden supporters waved banners reading “US govt are the real terrorists” and US leaders were branded “murderers” by the radicals, who warned revenge attacks were “guaranteed”.

“It is only a matter of time before another atrocity – the West is the enemy,” Abu Muaz, 28, from east London, said.

The pro-bin Laden event was organised by controversial preacher Anjem Choudary, a member of the Muslims Against Crusades group which gained notoriety by burning poppies, the symbol of remembrance for deaths in war, during an Armistice Day protest in London last year.

The EDL supporters brandished placards saying “bin Laden burn in hell” and traded insults with the Islamic radicals from behind the lines of police officers.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said about 150 people had taken part in a prayer vigil outside the embassy, but there were no immediate reports of arrests.
