This weekend promises to be a very interesting one for the Malta Racing Club and local horse racing enthusiasts as a series of events will take place between today and Sunday, locally and abroad.

On the international front, two Maltese jockeys are due to represent the country in two competitions, one at the Anfa racetrack in Morocco, and the other at the famous Agnano racetrack in Naples. Both races form part of the 2011 Mediterranean Horse Racing Union Championship.

Ramon Grima will be in action in Casablanca this afternoon with the race starting at 2 p.m. Grima is one of the best jockeys in Malta, having won the Mediterranean Derby twice on Just the Best, one of the most-loved horses in the country.

Charlò Debono will compete in Naples during a meeting that also comprises the popular Lotteria di Agnano race. The trotting race in Naples is the second leg of the Mediterranean Horse Racing Union Championship in which the Maltese team, the title holders, are leading the table after their success in the first leg, held here on March 31.

Drivers from France, Italy, Malta, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine will be vying for the honours in this race, to be held on Sunday at 4.05 p.m.

The Marsa racetrack will host two meetings over the next three days. An international ladies race is on the cards this evening with Maltese, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian drivers taking part.

There are high expectations that horse racing followers will be treated to one of the best races of the season during this evening’s meeting. The start list includes three Tazza l-Kbira winners, namely James De L’Iton, In Vitro Du Bourg and Kakisis, plus Arnie Sensation and Joker de Choisel, winners of various trophies in the past few years.

The first race today starts at 7 p.m. while Sunday’s meeting gets underway at 2 p.m.
