A large structure that was illegally built in L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha along the cliff edge, in the scenic area known as L-Ahrax tal-Madonna, has been demolished by enforcement officers of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.

The illegal structure, consisting of two rooms, had been built on government land in a scheduled area of high landscape value, of ecological importance and a special area of conservation of international importance.

The operation was carried out with the assistance of the SAG Police.

The athority was stopped from carrying out another direct action operation in the same location, a few metres away from the demolished illegal structure, by a court prohibitory injunction which was presented by the contravenor’s lawyer,

The authority will await the court’s decision and should the injunction be turned down will take action to demolish this illegal structure.

Earlier this year, Mepa carried out other direct action operations in the area of L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha including the confiscation of a 20-tonne bulldozer, which was being used by a contractor to regularly dump large amounts of illegal construction material.
