Christians should pray for bin Laden: cardinal

Christians should pray for Osama bin Laden's soul even though he was their enemy, as forgiveness is a key teaching in the Bible, a cardinal told an Italian daily in an interview out today.

"I have prayed for the soul of Osama Bin Laden. We have to pray for him just like we pray for the victims of September 11. It's what Jesus teaches Christians," French cardinal Albert Vanhoye, 87, told Il Messaggero daily.

"Jesus obliges us to forgive our enemies. The 'Our Father' that we recite every day says that. Does it not say 'Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us'?" Vanhoye said.

"It's not possible to accept this prayer while holding on to rancour and cultivating hatred against our enemies," he said.

Vanhoye, a Jesuit priest, was made a cardinal in 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI in recognition for his scholarly work on the Bible.

One question : What is one supposed to feel, "sorrow" or "joy" at the death of this person ?

Any answers should leave any hint of human emotion out of this.

but who are you to decide or even comment on who can or cannot be saved, don't you think this is beyond any person's competence to decide or even comment about?

It was Christ Himself who preached forgiveness and declared the marriage indissoluble.
Church values never change.

Good one, Mr. Albert Fenech.

Albert Vanhoye should relate his call for prayers more towards how our beloved Christian Europe extinguished Jewish people like poultry in the recent past !!

`Luckily he was spared by the Americans who killed him.`

Being emotional does not meant being factual. True Christian values apart, one is supposedly innocent till proven guilty. Once proven guilty, then it is expected that sentence is carried out, all nice and legal, with no room left for doubts.

Would it not have been better to take this person alive. Perhaps we could have heard the other side of the story.

I am sure that pretty soon we will be offered lots n lots of conspiracy theories, some will make lots of money from it, too.

Again, perhaps capturing him alive was not convenient at the present circumstance, either, Who knows?
