The project to change the way the area outside City Gate looks, as presented by Minister Austin Gatt, proposes, among other things, the relocation of the Triton Fountain to the garden where the Air Force Memorial is situated.
I feel that, now that the area around the fountain is to be transformed into a pedestrian-only zone, then the fountain need not be relocated as this is quite a suitable place for it.
However, if the decision to shift the fountain is to stand, then I suggest a better place for it. Instead of transplanting it to the garden of the Air Force Memorial it should be placed above the MCP car park. If such a project were to be done on a partnership basis, the vast yard of the MCP car park could be built up to street level and the Triton Fountain placed on its roof.
Besides creating hundreds of parking places underneath the fountain and another big open space at street level, it would also cover up the eyesore that now lies right next to the proposed project.
