A police sergeant and two teenagers suffered smoke inhalation in a fire in a Qawra flat this evening.

Eyewitnesses said the fire developed in a kitchen but quick-thinking Sgt Chris Debono prevented it from spreading by using a fire extinguisher.

Neighbours helped him by giving him other fire extinguishers.

A medical team gave first aid to the sergeant and the two tenants, boys aged 16 and 18. The fire brigade was on the scene.
