Bin Laden was asked to surrender before being shot
Osama Bin Laden was asked to surrender by US troops before he was shot dead, Fox News is quoting intelligence sources as saying.
The terrorist leader had always said he would not be captured alive.
Bin Laden was shot dead during a raid by US ground troops on a compound in Pakistan. His body was captured by the Americans.
The troops landed in four helicopters. One of the helicopters suffered mechanical failure and was destroyed by the Americans. However none of the American soldiers were killed.
One of Bin Laden's sons was also killed in the operation.
President Barack Obama confirmed Bin Laden's death in a White House statement. Celebrations have erupted in Washington and New York. See separate stories.

I disagree, Dorielle Soler. Either the US government wants to be regarded as democratic, and he must behave decently. Or he uses the same methods as the terrorists, and must be regarded as a terrorist organization. What is the difference between a terrorist murder and a State murder? Morally, none. And please do not amalgamate all Westerners: I am a Westerner, but do not support fascist America in any manner and do not identify with it.

So now that "evil Binladen" has gone down the drain, the World would be a peaceful place to live, all terrorists will vanish from the face of the Earth, like dinosaurus did 65 Milliion years ago.
Sadam Husein: He was supported by US and other Western Countries, with weapons, he was praised for being their pet. After the job was done, suddenly he was evil, had weapons of mass destruction, he was going to attack to the "Free World" so we had to put him down. Then we destroyed Iraq, killed millions of innocent people, and got control over Iraq's oil...
Binladen: He was supported by US with weapons, like stinger missiles during the Soviet Invation in Afganistan. He was West's best allie. When Soviet Union ended, there was no need of Binladen, so he was the "evil terrorist" that we must put him down, since Afganistan has natural resources that we need.
The same pattern we find it for Milosevic, Mubarak, Gantafi. Oh yeah and the body is some were in the ocean!!!

@George Debono. You disappoint me. If you read my comments again, slowly, carefully (they are in very plain English as always) you will see that 'I am on your side' my friend. I would appreciate a little apology. Thank you.

OK calm down Ms B Cassar. If you're happy with America go there and stay there. For me OBL was just murdered (if the information about his killing is true). It is surprising to see a government that sustains to be democratic using the same methods as a terrorist to eliminate him. This won't impede America to continue to decline.

When you gotta be tough, you gotta be tough. The American presidency is no place for wimps. Extremists heartily despise what they percieve to be softness in Westerners. Go America ! (And I'm not one to normally cheer the Yanks on !)Taking him alive would have posed enormous security risks, and cost millions in politically correct yet farcical trials, etc etc). Of course they'll try to hit back - but at last they've understood that Westerners can be tough and unforgiving too !

God Bless America!
The EU should take note, this is the way to act. Talking and the usual discussion leads to nowhere!!!!!!!!

With bated breath - well, maybe no so bated, he baited us for long enough - I now await Osama's apologists. They will clamour that behind all this is oil (not in their faces surely - Maltese saying said of someone who has no shame) and that this man's demise is unlawful according to International Law. You think I'm kiddin'?

Sorry Joe
Oh come on Joe...
This man was responsible for the horrible death of 3,000 Americans.
Would you talk like this if this guy was responsible for the murder of hundreds of your compatriots. No you would be baying for his blood..................
It really is strange - if the Americans do nothing people criticise them. And they criticise them equally if they do something.......as in this case - killing a pestilential murderer.
Look elsewhere in todays Times - there is a report about a 12 year old suicide bomber. These mullahs and Taliban send the young to their death - but they die peacefully of old age in their beds. It is obscene, nothing less.

Please note.
For someone with so much evil about him for long enough I could never figure out the impassive look in this man's eyes. Now I know. They are the eyes of the seriously deranged - but calm, calculated, and determined.
Will he be having a good time now? If you see what I mean? Or enjoying the embrace of the Lord? (depending on where one's coming from).

Great news !! Indeed a great successful capture of such an insensitive and evil criminal who murdered so many innocent lives !
Other greedy arrogant evil tyrants and their family members who claim themselves as “leaders”, who have sponsored terrorism and systematically murdered and are still murdering their own folk should take a good note of Osama bin Laden’s self imposed fate. They should keep in mind that they are not far from having their existence ended through a similar event.

>>Let's put this in perspective... Ten years of "war on terror" to kill this one guy!
Let's put it in PROPER perspective. The man killed 3,000 Americans and emboldened Islamic extremists across the globe. This is not about one man, but a fight for our very survival.

I doubt that it is all over. He had thousands if not millions of supporters who will want or support retribution and like the mythical story, cut off one head and seven more grow in its place.

It's a good thing he didn't surrender because millions of US tax payers dollars would have went towards his trial and security for a trial that would have taken years to prepare. Let him rot in hell.

In 20 years times we will see the closet communists coming out with shirts with his face printed on it just as they did with the other mass murderer, Che Guevara.
