They used to say that an Ambassador is one who lies abroad for the benefit of his country! Puns apart, Ambassador Douglas W. Kmiec is spending his time in Malta telling the truth and saying it loud and clear. I was one of the many and many Maltese and Gozitans who came across the Ambassador’s way and had the privilege to come to know him even if for a short time.
Now that he is leaving Malta one might ponder and think the amount of good that Prof. Kmiec has done to the image of the United States. Perhaps, without much effort, just by being himself with all the transparency and spontaneity that transpire from such a veritable gentleman. Wherever he goes he inspires trust and friendship.
In the short time that he will have spent in Malta he will certainly have enhanced relations between the two countries. That is exactly what an Ambassador is supposed to be doing out of his country.
That is exactly what Ambassador Kmiec has been doing and I am sure will be doing until this coming feast, if not of the Assumption, of the Visitation. Well done! Full marks!
