None of the leaders of the EU have been invited for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton taking place in London this morning.

A spokesman for the Commission confirmed that none of the three main figureheads of the EU, Commission President Barroso, the President of the European Council Van Rompuy and the President of the EP Buzek have been invited by the Royal family to attend the wedding.

However, the spokesman said that President Barroso does not really feel excluded or upset on the issue as "it is for the British royal family to decide who they want to invite."

"There were several royal weddings in recent years in the European Union, most recently in Sweden and Denmark and he wasn't invited to those either," the spokesman said.

On the other hand, a spokesman for Clarence House, the official residence of Prince William, said that "the wedding is not a state occasion and invitees are mostly with some sort of connection to the couple."

Not even Baroness Ashton – the EU's Foreign Policy Chief and a British member of the House of Lords has been invited.

The UK is considered to be the most sceptical member states of the EU. However a Commission source said that "this had nothing to do with the exclusion of EU dignitaries at the royal wedding."
