The pig breeding farm on Comino will soon be closed down following a Mepa Board decision today to grant a development permit for an extension to the pig farm in Ghammieri.

The extension will include the construction of an artificial insemination centre, a laboratory, storage facilities, offices and a livestock farm for pigs mainly utilised as a quarantine for imported breeding stock, prior to the distribution of this stock to other farms.

In granting the development permit, Mepa asked the applicant, The Pig Breeder’s Cooperative (KIM), to vacate the Comino farm and to clear the facility including the sewage system.

The Comino farm was set up in 1979 following a swine fever epidemic which wiped out most of Malta’s pig population.

As a Natura 2000 site, Comino forms part of a network of European nature reserves that merit special protection on a European level due to their ecological importance. Comino is also designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
