The Tritons Fountain outside City Gate is to be moved from City Gate to the garden opposite the Hotel Phoenicia, Transport Minister Austin Gatt announced today.

He said that €4 million would be spent just on the approaches to City Gate, which, shorn of the current bus terminus and the fountain, would be a wide, paved open space decorated with 76 trees and offering an open view of the City entrance and the bastions.

He said that €500,000 will also be spent to enhance the appearance of the apartments just inside the Capital, on the left of the entrance (Opposite where the new Parliament will be).

He said new wooden balconies will be built and there will be the original awnings.

A car park for some 55 vehicles will be available at one side of of the city entrance, just outside the Capital.

Meanwhile, the City Gate project itself reaches another milestone as from next week when work on the demolition of City Gate is due to start.
