A 27-year-old man from Naxxar, Marvic Stivala, 27, admitted in court today to having assaulted referee Paul Apap during a football match at the Centenary Stadium.

He also admitted threatening the referee and disobeyed police orders.

The incident happened at the end of a knock-out competition match between Zejtun Corinthians and Naxxar Lions. The Corinthians won the match 2-0 and the incident happened after the second goal was scored in stoppage time.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi fined Mr Stivana €200 ad banned him from any public sport activity for a year starting from the start of the next football season.

The Malta Referees Association condemned yesterday's incident.
