I write after reading the report about the new traffic arrangements (April 16) insofar as these impact Valletta residents in the Hastings area.

With all due respect to whoever came up with these traffic arrangements, the people responsible did not consider properly the gross inconvenience we Valletta residents will be subjected to.

The new route implies passing through various narrow streets, at times uphill with the evident impracticability for heavy vehicles especially when manoeuvring sharp bends.

Would it not have made more sense if prior to the demolition of City Gate and the introduction of these traffic arrangements a two-week trial was undertaken to test the suitability of these traffic arrangements?

And why have not other routes through wider streets been considered? For example, it would make more sense if traffic were to be routed around Castille Square and down to South Street.

In all of this I still fail to comprehend why the authorities have persisted in their intent to demolish City Gate – soon to become city gap – without rebuilding a new gate and road in tune with Valletta’s unique baroque architecture.

Hopefully better sense will prevail.
