The Maltese faithful celebrated Good Friday today and many attended one of the several Good Friday processions held in a number of towns and villages across Malta and Gozo this evening.

The processions are held to commemorate the death of Christ before he is risen again on Easter, next Sunday.

The statues, representing several moments from the passion of Christ, were accompanied by hundreds of people in biblical costumes who walked in front and behind as spectators watched while prayers were recited and bands played funeral marches.

Others masked themselves in white and walked or crawled on their knees in sacrifice, some of them chained.

A sombre mood was created with the street decorations but although many still fast on Good Friday, many lent and Easter sweets were sold, including figolli, qaghaq tal-appostli and karamelli tal-harrub.
