Further to the letter by Joseph Agius (April 14) with regard to the condition of Xlendi Tower, he can rest assured that plans are in hand to carry out a full restoration of this historical monument.

The tower is now in joint custody of the Munxar local council and Din l-Art Ħelwa while the undersigned has been engaged to supervise the works. As a consequence of many years of neglect, exposure to the elements and past detrimental repairs, numerous issues need to be addressed.

Besides the more routine conservation operations, a number of major works are envisaged ranging from the dismantling and reconstruction of parts of the building to the re-establishment of missing sections of its original fabric.

To this end, a thorough appraisal of the structure’s present condition and its past is being carried out prior to intervening.

Xlendi Tower, constructed in 1650, is the oldest of its kind in Gozo. Once planning permission is obtained and the necessary funding secured, it will receive the much-needed preservation it merits.
