Works to start on major roads
Works on the rebuilding of several major roads will start at the end of the month at part of the TEN-T Trans-European Transport Network.
Transport Malta said the roads are Council of Europe and Garibaldi Streets in Luqa, which have a length of 2.2km, Flagstone Wharf and Triq l-Ghassara tal-Gheneb in Marsa (1.3km), Marfa Road from Mellieha to Cirkewwa (2.6km) and Mgarr Road, Gozo, between Xewkija and Victoria (3km).
In all cases, diversionary routes have already been planned, including arrangements for the bus service made with Arriva.
The works on Council of Europe and Garibaldi streets are projected to cost €10m and will be completed in a year.
The roads in Marsa are budgeted to cost €7.5m. They will provide easier access from the Menqa area to the sea passenger terminal and Valletta Waterfront. The work will be completed in under a year.
The rebuilding of Marfa Road will cost €10.7m. The road works in Gozo will take 14 months and cost €12m.
85% of the cost of the projects will be forked out by the EU.
TM deputy chairman Jonathan Vella said the projects will include new utility services and boundary walls, landscaping, street furniture and safety features.

The real question here is, when will the work be finished?

When is work going to be started on major strees and roads in Gozo, especially the roads that the government is responsible for. Has anyone ever passed on to Ramla via Ramla Road from Rabat. It's a road that doesn't even belong in a third world country. The fixed the road that is not in the residential area, but left the road in the residential area untouched. What a real shame. I hope Mr. Said is seeing this as he lives on the same road I am mentioning.

Wasn’t it not also the coast road from Pembroke up to Kennedy Grove in the programme of new roads for 2011, or am I mistaken?
Could the Hon. Minister Austin Gatt kindly comply?
Much obliged.

Imma kif dejjem tgergru. Nothing to do with the election, it is still two years away and the rebuilding of roads is ongoing. The state of the roads is at its best though it is an ongoing exercise. If works are done only in the North they moan because nothing is done in the South. If works are done in the South they moan because the election is coming. You people deserve to be deported instead of the illegal immigrants.

"The work will be completed in under a year."
Under a year for a couple of kms? Unbelievable! ONLY IN MALTA

It is good to hear that these ten T projects are FINALLY starting. Unfortunately, there are two even more important projects that the government, in his wisdom, appears to have put on the back burner.
I am referring specifically to the Kappara and Addolorata junctions (at the Marsa crossroads) respectively. During peak traffic hours, these two vital junctions are a horrible mess of traffic gridlock, leading to the emission of large amounts of noxious exhaust gases unnecessarily.
These critical infrastructural projects must not be delayed any further! For the sake of our mental and physical health, we need to get started on them ASAP.
Can the responsible minister come explain why these two projects have been delayed for so long??

Actually it should read " forked out by the Maltese motorist." The EU does not pay for anything. It takes our taxes and gives us a bit back with strings attached. How nice is that?

Right on cue for the upcoming tourism season!
A note for the author if I may... Why "forked out by" rather than " will derive from"?

Is it perhaps that we're having an election in 2 years' time ??
Mr Joseph Calleja

Mr Mizzi you just hit the nail on the head. Don't forget that the Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal Project is scheduled to be finished around that time. ( Although I doubt it). Election time always produces a lot of photo shoots and bragging about all the accomplishments, which is fair enough. The question is. Why is it that all these accomplishments seem to be finished on or about election time. By the way don't forget City Gate and the Nude Opera House. What happened to the Upper Barrakka Lift Project? Not that important I guess.

So the government should stop all activity after 1 year in office, so as to not be accused of electioneering by launching major projects, right?
Perhaps thats why Labour governments were such crap, they never realised that elections came and went, which explains why not 1 decent road was built in 16 years.
Ray Gatt

Yeah Mr. Mizzi and now they'll employ over 8000 in the civil service just to steal their vote, and the next budget from the minister of finance will call it 'Rainbow budget' as one labour finance minister once called it in the 70ies for lowering the price of a tin of tuna.

In two years time Malta will be a paradise not just a two kms. of good road.
