Legal hunting best deterrent to illegal shooting - FKNK
The present of genuine hunters in the countryside was the best deterrent to the illegal shooting of protected bird species, the Hunters' Federation said.
It said in a statement that BirdLife and by groups of foreigners, currently roaming the Maltese countryside surveying hunters, had so far only reported illegal shooting on two occasions.
These were a day prior to the opening of this spring hunting season, and last Sunday, when hunting was not permitted.
A security services company commissioned by the federation (FKNK) to monitor some of the BLM groups, was carrying such monitoring only during hunting hours.
The FKNK said it was investigating the BLM reports and it would revoke the membership of any member found guilty of shooting protected species.
It warned that it would not permit criminals, who persisted with shooting protected species, to undermine genuine hunters' rights to yet again practice their traditional socio-cultural passion of turtle dove and quail spring hunting through the application of a derogation.
These same hunters this year paid more than €280,000 to ensure strict enforcement by the police corps during the season.
"Although the FKNK is aware that the European Commission expects and respects the derogation application report from the member state, the FKNK will also send a report to the Commission regarding the application of the derogation this spring, which report will also include any verified incident of illegal shooting and any actions of the FKNK thereof.
"It is also envisaged that FKNK's report will include some activities of BLM's foreign groups, and also other activities that may occur by BLM's German partners CABS, which latter groups are expected to arrive in Malta later this week," FKNK said.
It said that the foreign groups were surveying hunters, who were practising their passions in a perfectly legal manner.

Hunting is not a hobby, its just killing a living creature for no reason at all but pleasure.

Game birds are eaten...same as fish...same as the birds hunted in all EU member states...same as the birds hunting all over the world.
By your yard stick...Dinning out with friends is not a hobby, its just killing a living creature for no reason at all but pleasure of tucking in on a juicy steak

human rights law ???????
The right to privacy is a fundamental human right, which is safeguarded and enshrined in our Constitution. The enforcement of the right to privacy is facilitated by the protection of personal data from abuse.

Secondly, if FKNK want to live up to the 'conservation' they named themselves with,
they should consider taking the initiative, and organise watches ALSO beyond the hours when no hunting is allowed....just like BLM does.
Short of this, it becomes evident that FKNK's only concern is hunting, and nothing else.
So long for the (illogical) claims of being the stalwarts of environment protection!

Why not take it a step further and ask us to rule the country :D
Of course that our main concern is the open season, without it there would be no legal hunting which is what we seek to maintain.
Do not forget that we are all citizens who contribute to the Maltese economy like the rest of the population and thus we all pay taxes. The responsability for the upkeeping of the law remains of the police, we can give a helping hand while we are out there enjoying our hobby but like most of the Maltese we have jobs and families which we have to feed and safeguard so we work the rest of the year.

Legal hunting best deterrent to illegal shooting - says FKNK
Now what was exactly happening BEFORE we had raw filming exposing the FACT that protected birds are ACTUALLY being killed?
Weren't the same hunters roaming the countryside then? Wasn't it also open season?
Yet the same hunters and their representatives remained in denial mode.
What is next - 365 day 24 hour 'open' season, so that hunters may protect supposedly protected birds from their peers?
