An 85-year-old woman was this morning acquitted of seriously injuring a woman by driving dangerously.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani cleared Maria Dolores Degabriele of Sliema of seriously injuring 80-year-old Carmelina Debono in January 2009 when she hit her while crossing Triq is-Swieqi in Swieqi.

The magistrate said the victim had crossed the road from between two parked cars when she should have used the zebra crossing.

In doing so, she created a sudden emergency placing herself in a dangerous position.
