The Catholic Church celebrated Our Lady of Sorrows today with thousands in Malta taking part in processions, opening the Holy Week.

Archbishop Paul Cremona led the procession from Ta' Giezu Church in Valletta.

Some people walked barefoot in a sign of sacrifice.

Archbishop Cremona will also lead a national Holy Week pilgrimage on Wednesday evening in Mdina.

The text written by Pope John Paul II, which has been translated into Maltese by Fr Michael Bugeja, will be used.
