Four people, including a 59-year old grandmother and her two-year-old grandson, were injured in two separate accidents yesterday.
The woman and little boy were involved in a head-on collision with a sightseeing bus in the afternoon just outside Siġġiewi. The accident happened at about 1.10 p.m. along Siġġiewi Road.
The woman, from Żebbuġ, was headed towards Siġġiewi in her blue Renault Megane Scenic when she hit a hop-on hop-off double-decker bus travelling towards Sliema. There were about 25 passengers on the bus, most of them seated in the upper deck.
The boy suffered a fractured leg.
“I was driving along when this car left its lane and crashed into my bus,” driver Jesmond Zahra, 39, of Żejtun said. “As soon as I got out of the bus I stared at my feet to see whether they were still there,” he added.
He said his passengers disembarked without any problems and they were picked up shortly afterwards by another sightseeing bus.
It was not so easy for the female driver, as Civil Protection Department personnel had to cut the car open to release her before she was taken to hospital.
Traffic on one lane was closed for a number of hours.
Earlier, at 9.40 p.m., a 33-year-old woman suffered grievous injuries when her Mazda 323 crashed into a wall in Wied il-Għajn Street, Żabbar. She is not in a critical condition.
In the car with her were two boys, one aged 14 and the other two. The teenager only suffered slight injuries and the toddler’s condition was not immediately known.
