The majority of the 785 divorces filed with the Public Registry during the past 30 years were obtained in the UK (422), Australia (112) and the US (43).
The information results from a table that Communications Minister Austin Gatt laid on the Table of The House when answering a parliamentary question by Joe Mizzi (PL).
Next in line were Germany (31) and Canada (29).Filed divorces were also obtained from Italy (18), Russia (13) and the Netherlands (two).
Notably, there were divorces from Syria (five), Tunisia (three), South Africa (two) and Congo, Nigeria and Pakistan (one each).
Divorce decisions obtained from abroad are registered at the Malta Public Registry provided the decision has been given by a competent court of the country in which one of the spouses is either a citizen or domiciled there.
