Arch bridges gap in bastions
An arch has been built at the entrance to Vittoriosa to bridge a gap in the historic bastions made when the road was laid.
Resources Minister George Pullicino said the project was part of the restoration of the bastions.
The arch has been built to rejoin the two parts of St John Bastion.
The ministry is spending €36 million on the restoration of the bastions, including €9 million for the bastions around Vittoriosa.
Video above shows various stages of the work on the arch.

Very nice work, but what about the bastions that we have in Bormla, they are in a very bad state. Joseph Scerri Mayor of Bormla

This shows that Malta is blessed with excellent craftsman. Pity that the workmen shown in the video were not wearing proper safety equipment - this shows the amateurism of those who churn out regulations but do not ensure that these are observed.
I believe that Minister George Pullicino is renowned for this sort of thing unfortunately. Are the Development Site Regulations which were issued with so much fanfare actually being observed? Hardly as much as is required though some progress has been made. The abuses involved should not happen, should bot be tolerated. Hopefully those responsible for the proper observance of these regulations will be themselves severely reprimanded.
Otherwise the administration's record will continue going negative as it's been doing for such a long time.
Consider VAT, Why is there the obvious illegal slack in this? It's unfair that certain shops, bakeries, businesses, craftsmen go by the book but quite a number of others SIMPLY DO NOT issue Fiscal Receipts. We need action not mere words or propaganda.

I always thought that the word restoration meant to make better or renew what is or was there before. In this case there was never an arch in that place as originally the gap between the bastions did not exist.
This arch is an eyesore and a waste of good money that could have been spent better elsewhere.

This is Maltese craftstworkmanship at its very best. This is what the Maltese are made of! U mela konkos!!!! Gebla maltija! Few are remarking about the enormous work of restoration being carried out around the Island, especially the fortifications. This is the Maltese Renaissance.

This reminds me of the Porta Reale bridge widening in 1964 when the present mess of a city gate that we are shortly going to tear down was being freshly built.
I am afraid to say that work safety practice for the stone masons is still as it was in 1964 !
Unbelievable but true.

While congratulating the hard working Birgu local council headed by the idefatigable Mr. John Boxall I must admit I do not like the arch. What is its purpose? Was there an arch before the bastion was demolished to make way for the road? I don't think so. The money spent could have been use on some other, more worthy cause. Be that as it may, When will the restoraton of Senglea's bastions commence? The war damaged part of St. Michael's bastion above the Macina is crying out for attention as is the vedette at the other end of the peninsula. Not to mention the clock towers of both Senglea and Birgu.

Mela l-Belt tal-Birgu kellna fetħa bejn is-swar fi Triq il-Mina l-Kbira u qed nagħmlu Mina (bieb) u hekk sewwa kif suppost u għandu jkun. Prosit.
Mela l-Belt, Valletta għandna Mina (bieb) f'bieb il-Belt u hekk sewwa kif suppost u ghandu jkun hemm f’kull daħla ta’ xi Belt speċjalment il-Belt Kapitali. Imma x-xahar id-dieħel il-Ministru Austin Gatt qalilna li dan ser ineħuħ u se nagħmlu fetħa bejn is-swar, (kif kien hemm il-Birgu u ser nagħmlu Mina Bieb, minflok) għax hekk qallina il-BRAVU Perit Pjano.
Din ma tagħmilx sens. Jista xi ħadd jispjegali kif id-daħla tal-Belt Kapitali tagħna li min dejjem kienet bil-bieb issa se tkun semplċi daħla, tiċrieta jew fetħa fis-sur kif kien hemm il-Birgu u issa qed nagħmlu Bieb kif hemm il-Belt Kapitali u ser titneħa.
Nistenna risposta.

Well done to all concerned in this architectural project which will give Birgu a new majestic entrance. May I take this opportunity to praise also the repairs done to the huge walls at Argotti Gardens on top of Sa Maison Road. The final result looks very professional. Finally I am sorry to say that, in my opinion, the Piano plan for the Valletta entrance was not the best decision that could be taken!

Of course, if we were to ask The Great God Piano about this, he would say it was a fake and not worth the time, money and effort.

I DO like it, Mr Camm - very much. I just wish we were going t to have something along those lines at City (no)Gate instead of that horrible gash in the fortifications.
