Evacuations from Libya helped push the number of passengers passing through the airport to more than 240,000 in March, an increase of 16.4 per cent over the same period last year and a record high for the month.
Seat capacity reached 340,975, an increase of 18.6 per cent, the Malta International Airport said. These figures include departing traffic on unscheduled aircraft.
Excluding the evacuations, March traffic would have reached nearly 233,000 passenger movements – still a healthy increase of 12.8 per cent. Passenger movements in military and private aircraft were not included in the figures.
The Spanish, French and Italian markets again grew “remarkably” in March by 56.3 per cent, 49.4 per cent and 14.4 per cent respectively, while the UK market grew by 3.2 per cent and the German market decreased by 3.6 per cent.
