Joseph Azzopardi, of Tarxien, was this evening found guilty of the murder of 20-year-old Paola woman Therese Agius.

Jurors returned an 8-1 guilty verdict.

The body of Therese Agius was found in the sea off Delimara on October 12, 1999. Her hands and feet were bound.

The woman, who had been missing for almost two weeks, was injected with a fatal dose of heroin by Azzopardi.

The prosecution argued that Mr Azzopardi injected Ms Agius with the drug, on her request, in the Gżira apartment she rented to prostitute herself. The girl overdosed but the accused did not seek medical attention for her. He later  tied her body with a rope and dumped her into the sea. She is thought to have been dead before being thrown into the sea.
