and Austin Gatt told us that only a few end their marriage in Malta. In the report found below it shows that there were 1616 marriages last year. In the same year 541 broke up their marriage. This means that almost one third of marraiges in Malta break up.
Qum mir raqda Gonzi PN. This is the sad reality of our state. X familja soda hu? 33% break up

So, there are over a 1000 people who no longer officially form a family, but cannot, up to now, remarry (civilly of course), although why a person would want to remarry is beyond me. But let us say that there ARE couples who do want to....but because the Maltese government wants to do a Pilate, has 'sagely' left the decision to the population...
How can that be deemed fair?
While I am all for family values and strengthening the ties of marriage, we have to admit and acknowledge that there are bonds that have failed. Why should I be the one to decide whether my neighbour / friend / family member gets divorced or not?
And with divorces available from EU member states, isn't it all a bit idiotic? The Maltese courts acknowledge and accept these courts' decisions... which makes the referendum rather waste of time and money. Divorce is here and available, for those who have the money!

For some reason, we see divorce as a signal of failure, despite the fact that each of us has a right, and an obligation, to rectify any other mistake we make in life
THE CHOICE IS ONLY MY OWN.

So that is 1,082 people affected. In just one year. Officially.
How many more are de facto separated? Waiting for their day in court? How many never even went to court to make it official? How many have simply upped and left the country?
