The hunters’ federation, FKNK, yesterday urged its members to copy it in on the SMS they will be sending to the planning authority each time they shoot a bird during the spring hunting season.

This would enable the federation to closely monitor the season, which opens tomorrow.

Maltese and Gozitan hunters are expected to register each bird they shoot down by sending an SMS to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, enabling it to keep tabs on how many quails and turtle doves are killed.

The 10,000 licensed hunters must share the imposed limits of 2,500 quails and 9,000 turtle doves.

The federation said hunters should send an SMS with the letter S when they shoot a turtle dove and the letter G when they shoot a quail. The SMS must be sent to number 5061 6250.

It also urged hunters to call the police on number 119 in case of emergency.
