It is so sad that a country like Italy is resorting to bullying tactics over the issue of the poor immigrants who find themselves in the middle of nowhere. Over many years Italy and its culture have formed an integral part of our make-up; maybe we deluded ourselves that Maltese are on par with our Italian counterparts. It is now obvious that as far as our big neighbour is concerned we have no standing at all.

Politically Italy has become the joke of Europe especially with its current Prime Minister who has managed to emulate comedians from the silver screen era by his behaviour.

Where are all the other leaders of the European Union who only a matter of weeks ago were patting us on the back during the evacuation from Libya of their thousands of nationals. Do we not deserve some support from England, France, Germany, Holland and others?

Thus far our Prime Minister has taken a firm stand and has shown Big Brother Italy that Malta is not prepared to just roll over. Recent attacks by Italian politicians and the media just show their total disrespect towards us. If the posing and expensive European Parliament is not capable of dealing with the immigration issues then maybe it is time to go to the United Nations.

The bottom line is that trying to apportion blame is not going to bring back those poor souls who lost their lives. The problem has been with us for a long time and it needs solving urgently.
