The Royal Canadian Mint has issued two new coins to commemorate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The $20 silver coin features a Swarovski sapphire-coloured crystal in a nod to Miss Middleton’s famous engagement ring, which belonged to William’s mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

The engraving of the couple, which shows them gazing towards each other, was designed by Canadian artist Laurie McGaw. The second coin – the nickel-plated steel 25-cent – features a colour image of William and Kate. It is based on a photograph taken of them as they attended a friend’s wedding in Austria in 2008. On the obverse side of both coins is an effigy of the Queen. Prince William, who will one day be King of Canada, will travel to the country with his new bride at the end of June on their first ever joint official overseas tour.
