Driver injured in Paola crash
The driver of a small refuse truck was injured this afternoon when his truck went out of control as it was driven downhill at Sta Lucija Avenue, opposite the Addolorata cemetery.
The truck crossed to the other side of the road, smashing into two trees and an electricity pole before coming to a stop.
Policemen and members of the Civil Protection Department rushed to the scene to help the driver, a 40-year-old from Msida, out of the vehicle. He is receiving hospital treatment.

Imagine what would have happened if that truch hit a small family car with kids in it. Despite the serious outcome, this was a lucky incident concidering what else could have happened. Surely over speeding cannot be pulled into the equation this time. This road is another one which seriously needs crash barriers due to the heavy daily usage, trees on the sides and its incline. However our authorities felt more fit to badly install a crash barrier along Imriehel bypass to prevent pedestrians using the pavement rather than securing roads like this and others like Imdina road, Luqa road, Portes Des Bombes strech and many others with the same characterisitics. In this country we feel more important to spend our limited resources saving people at sea rather than preventing road fatalities, perhaps due to more international media coverage. And when are we going to start maintaining roads for road users rather than for VIP visitors? Sometimes it only demands some comon sense rather than expensive reconstructions to make our roads much safer and more user friendly. A final note to drivers - Braking hard an empty double wheeled vehicle will make it skid from the rear.

I saw the aftermath of this accident few minutes atfer it occured. Thank God he came out alive albeit injured. There are 2 points
1. This accident (cause it's the only way we learn) shows the need for crash barriers, on the sides to avoid the trees and poles, and the middle to avoid the trees and crossing onto the oncoming traffic. if traffic was coming yesterday, we'd have yet another death.
2. Further down cars cross from the Paola side to go downhill. This should be forbidden. Also much further down, opposite cemetery entrance, several cowboys are crossing from the exit near that big tower directtly to the cemetery entrance to avoid be able to jump the traffic accumulating at the lights. This also must be forbidden. But I know it will never happen until death shows the way. I appeal to whoever has the power to change this, please do it before blood on your hands forces you to.

R u surprised?! The debris and car(s) 'remains' of the traffic accident which occured 5 days ago, at Sammat Street corner with St.Ubaldesca, are still there.

CRASH BARRIERS in such two-way roads are a MUST! Can you immagine this small truck smashing head-on into a family car coming uphill this busy road?
Such CRASH BARRIERS will at least contain the incident on the same side of the road!
