A total of almost 600 migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa between yesterday afternoon and this morning.

535 arrived yesterday and 69 this morning. They are believed to have left from Tunisia.

Italy and France have agreed to carry out joint patrols off Tunisia's coast to block migrants headed for Europe, with the French interior minister saying there was no duty to take in boat people.
