Early morning blackout mostly goes unnoticed

A number of localities were shrouded in darkness in the small hours of Thursday morning after a boiler at the Delimara Power station developed a fault.

The blackout, which lasted just over two hours, was caused when a 60MW boiler tripped at 1.48 a.m. due to a fault, an Enemalta spokesman said.

As a result, load shedding systems were automatically activated to stabilise the system and the power supply was restored to all localities by about 4 a.m.

Although many slept through the blackout, the situation was reminiscent of major power cuts that caused uproar last year.

However, the spokesman noted the culprit this time was not the infamous boiler number 7, which, after the incidents last year, has its own Facebook fan page with over 6,000 followers.
