Labour MP Anton Refalo this morning reiterated his view that Gozo should be served by a fixed wing aircraft - a service which would necessitate extension of the disused Xewkija heliport to create an airstrip.

Dr Refalo told the Radio Malta programme Ghandi xi Nghid that he backed all reasonable measures to improve accessibility to Gozo, including the service of a small fixed wing aircraft.

He also complained that it was taking too long for the new terminal building for the Gozo ferries in Cirkewwa to be built.

The only air service to Gozo is currently provided by a seaplane which operates between Grand Harbour and Mgarr.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said she agreed that a study should be made on the possibility of having a tunnel between Malta and Gozo. Detailed studies on the environmental, financial and scientific aspects and the economic impact were needed, the minister said. The government was seeing who could conduct these studies and whether the EU could fund them.
