Shot Marsh Harrier recovered by BirdLife
This shot male Marsh Harrier was recovered yesterday afternoon by BirdLife Malta, after being reported by a lady out walking at Hondoq ir-Rummien in Gozo.
BirdLife said this was the fifth shot protected bird received by BirdLife Malta over the past four weeks. A further eight protected birds were seen in flight with gunshot injuries during this time period.
For a bird to be recovered it must first be shot but not killed, then escape the hunter, be found by someone willing to help, and then be passed onto BirdLife Malta. The number of shot protected birds recovered by BirdLife Malta is therefore only the tip of the ice-berg.
The BirdLife Malta website has been updated with a list detailing illegal activity, and contact numbers and advice on how to effectively report illegalities.
Apart from reporting hunting and trapping crimes, witnesses can also leave a comment on the website; revealing, rejecting and publicly condemning these crimes.

What a real shame the Maltese 'hunters' have no understanding or care about any regulation or the natural environment which does not belong to them. The only positive out of this is that 2011 will now be the last where any kind of Spring hunting is authorised. I'm sure the EU and CABS have noted this already.

There are no hunting and trapping crimes. Pastimes are not crimes. Can't we make a difference between true crimes and abuse of petty laws. Catching birds is certainly no crime. And God forbid if ever it is made a crime. Otherwise it's goodbye to law and order. Otherwise let's even make birdwatching a crime.

Catching protected birds is a crime, and it is not petty. In fact, like it or not it can lead to even prison sentences.

J Farrugia sums up everything, he does not consider shooting a protected bird a crime! Like him I believe there are many, otherwise we will not hear shooting out of any hunting season, and will not find any injured/dead protected birds!
This is the reason that hunters cannot be trusted.
And J Farrugia, a pastime does not involve the maiming or killing animals - God forbid such attrocities.

So, in your wisdom, shooting birds and watching them amount to the same thing! U ddahhaqniex, Farrugia!
