A 25 minute documentary about censorship in Malta has been aired by Al Jazeera, focusing on the story of student editor Mark Camilleri who was charged for publishing an explicit piece of prose on newspaper Realta’.

The documentary, which portrays Malta as a country stuck to its Catholic traditions, ends with a note saying Mr Camilleri was acquitted of all charges.

However, it leaves out the fact that the case has now been appealed by the Attorney General and is therefore yet to be concluded.

Mr Camilleri, together with the award-winning author of the controversial text Alex Vella Gera, potentially faces months in prison if there is a conviction.

The documentary also features the story of the play Stitching which was banned from being performed in Malta, even though it only had a 14+ rating in the UK.

The courts had found the Board of Stage and Film Classification was justified in its decision to ban the play, but the producers have appealed its decision.
