Mepa, after having secured €3.4 million through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development will issue a tender for the undertaking of management planning for all terrestrial Natura 2000 sites in the Maltese islands.

These plans will encompass a long-term ecological vision for the site; outline a legal framework and applicable protection measures; set out conservation objectives and related measures; establish regulation of activities that can be carried out in the site; establish a monitor programme of ecological processes and human activities; involve the local communities and other stakeholders; adoption of financial mechanisms to promote and manage the site and development of an appropriate infrastructure for site management.

The conservation objectives are to be based on the restoration or maintenance of the favourable conservation status of species and habitats for which the Natura 2000 site has been designated.
