Fifteen years after Tottenham clinched the UEFA Cup against Anderlecht on penalties, their North London rivals, Arsenal, reached the final of the competition in Copenhagen, only to lose to Turkish side Galatasaray in a penalty shoot-out.

This was the third time UEFA staged the ultimate showdown at a neutral venue after ditching the home and away two-leg final.

To make up for Arsenal’s upset, the following season, 2000-01, Liverpool went all the way and won the UEFA Cup through another new ruling, the golden goal... a sudden death to a match when a team scores in extra-time.

Liverpool’s win came at the expense of Spanish side Alves. It was the Reds’ third success in the competition.
