A total of 6,000 hunters will be out and about when the hunting season opens next week, after the deadline for applications closed yesterday.

According to the regulations, they will only be allowed to shoot one bird per day for a maximum of four in a season and will be obliged to record their catches in the official carnet de chasse and by SMS.

However, the quotas for this season have been set at 9,000 turtledoves and 2,500 quails and the season will close early if these national bag limits are reached before April 30. Proceeds from the €50 licence fee to hunt this spring will go towards law enforcement.

Hunting will not be allowed on Sundays and public holidays.

The German bird watchers’ organisation CABS said it would send a team to Malta to monitor hunting and report any law breaking.
