A group of former port workers, who have been insisting on their share of a pension fund to which they had contributed when they were still working, believe Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is ignoring their pleas.

The General Workers’ Union said it had received no feedback from Dr Gonzi ever since he was handed a petition signed by around 500 former port workers in February.

The former workers want their share of the Pension and Contingency Fund which used to be administered by port workers, shipping agents and the government. It was set up by law in 1974 and at one point the kitty had some €47 million in it.

The union said in the past, after every reform, port workers, including those who were retired and the heirs of those who had passed away, always received a lump sum payment from the fund. This time around, former port workers did not benefit despite having contributed to the fund for years.
