Trump lands China Open for maiden title

Beats Selby 10-6 in final

Emerging talent Judd Trump won his first ever snooker ranking event yesterday after edging out fellow Englishman Mark Selby 10-8 in a compelling China Open final in Beijing.

Selby, the world number four, had been on the ropes at 6-3 down but he rallied strongly and forced his way back to eight frames-all only for Trump to dig in his heels as the pressure mounted.

The 21-year-old qualifier from Bristol held on to edge a tense 17th frame and then kept his nerve to finish the job as Selby missed out.

Earlier, Trump who had seen off Shaun Murphy in a one-sided semi-final, had produced two breaks of 104 to move 3-1 clear.

He then moved to the brink of a 6-2 lead only for Selby, conqueror of local favourite Ding Junhui, to fight back in the eighth frame which he snatched 66-65 following a clearance of 62 after Trump missed a simple red to the corner pocket.
