U-17 squad for Ukraine qualifiers announced

The Malta U-17 national team will be playing in the European Junior Championships in Kiev, Ukraine, between April 7 and 10.

The championships are organised by LEN every two years.

Draws for this competition were held last January and the U-17 Malta team was pitted in Group D along with host country Ukraine, Israel and powerhouses Russia and the Czech Republic.

Three other qualification groups will be played simultaneously in Antwerp (Belgium), Odense (Denmark) and Elektrinai (Lithuania).

The top two teams in each of the four qualifying groups will join the top eight nations from the 2009 championships in the final round which will be played in Rijeka (Croatia) in September.

U-17 coach Karl Izzo and his assistant Anthony Farrugia announced a squad of 13 players for the trip to Kiev.

Squad: Robert Leuellen, Michael Paris, Keith Galea, Aleandro Mifsud, Edward Meli, Kai Dowling, Matthew Fenech, Kyle Debattista, Nicholas Portelli, Diego Borg, Luke Caruana, Dino Zammit (captain), Marc Grech.

The contingent will be led by ASA vice president Alan Bonello. Pierre Borg is the team’s physio.

April 8: (morning) Malta vs Russia; Czech Republic vs Israel. April 8: (evening) Russia vs Israel; Malta vs Ukraine.
April 9: Israel vs Ukraine; Russia vs Czech Republic.
April 10: Czech Republic vs Malta; Ukraine vs Russia.
