The Malta Association of Crohn’s and Colitis (MACC) recently held its first annual general meeting.

The association’s main aims are to offer support to people and relatives of people suffering from Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, the two primary forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), to help them improve their quality of life and to promote public awareness about these chronic conditions.

It also aims to promote patients’ rights and to encourage IBD-related research.

Two MACC members shared their experience of living with IBD. Problems encountered by local IBD patients were also discussed, including the lack of availability of clean toilets in public areas.

The meeting began with an address from MACC chairman Mary Grech Pace. She described the association’s achievements since its foundation in January 2010 and spoke about its vision for the coming years.

She said there was need for more support for the association to be able to carry out its plans.

MACC secretary Marica Vella then gave a detailed account of committee’s activities and the association’s treasurer Colette Cassar presented the accounts, which were approved.

The meeting was open to all members of the association, including the scientific members of the committee.
