The new bus terminus at St James’s Ditch in Valletta started to take shape yesterday with the arrival of the first of 26 Italian stone pine trees, which will provide natural shelter from direct sunlight especially during the summer months.
The trees, which are between 15 and 20 years old, are the same kind that adorn the Coliseum in Rome and their main feature is the long trunk which does not create any obstacles for the heritage around them.
The new terminus, which will replace the one at City Gate, will be far smaller, consisting of just 14 parking bays since there will be a higher utilisation of buses and less waiting time under the new bus service reform.
The current terminus has 41 bays.
The new terminus project, covering some 3,500 square metres, down from the current 9,500, will cost around €3 million.
