We were very disappointed to learn that Malta is considering the introduction of divorce. We are very fond of Malta, we visit the country often and we have many Maltese friends.
One of the main reasons we like Malta so much is the fact that the people have a deep faith and this is shown by the big part played by the Church in their ordinary lives on a daily basis. The family is very important in Malta and it shows in well-behaved children with respect for their elders.
In England we have had divorce for many years but it has not helped the country at all.
Many young people now go into marriage thinking that if it does not work out they can simply divorce. Second marriages or partnerships have less chance of surviving than first ones.
The result of this is that many children are growing up insingle-parent families without the balanced upbringing with two loving parents. This is very sad for the children. Grandparents lose the chance to see their grandchildren and the family unit breaks down.
The Maltese should think very carefully before they vote on this issue. Guard the family unit; it is so important.
Another result of divorce in England is that we have many single older people and as they get even older they will become very lonely and this will mean more illness because of stress.
The people of Malta have something very special – their love of God and His laws. We urge you to keep this and not vote for divorce.
Divorce is not a magic recipe for happiness; in fact, it is the opposite, causing grief and stress to all those affected by it.
