Last month’s rainfall amounted to 54.2 millimetres, which is 13.2 mm higher than average, the Meteorological Office said.
In a statement, it said that with a total of 12 rainy days, the wettest day (with hail) was the 20th with 27.8 mm, followed by the 19th with 7.4 mm.
The highest March rainfall on record was in 1925 with 178 mm, while the driest one was that of 1977 with just 0.40 mm.
The mean temperature registered by the Met Office was 13°C, lower than the climate norm by 0.4°C.
The warmest March since 1923 was that of 2001 (16.9°C), the coolest of 1953 (11.4°C).
Between March 8 and 10, the days were colder than the norm by around 4°C.
