A 6.1-magnitude undersea quake which rocked the southeastern Aegean Sea, off the north coast of Crete, this afternoon was felt in Malta by several people.
The university's Seismic Monitoring and Research Unit said the earthquak occurred at 3.29, and was felt by a number of people in Valletta, Ta' Xbiex and Sliema.
Several readers contacted timesofmalta.com to say they had felt a tremor.
One reader said that at 3.38 p.m., two consecutive tremors of around two seconds each were felt at the top floor of the Stock Exchange building.
"The tremors were enough to make light fittings shake and so did the water in the dispenser."
According to the Athens geodynamic institute no damage or injuries were immediately noted.
The quake struck near the Aegean island of Karpathos.
Greece accounts for half the earthquakes on the European continent.
The Seismic Monitoring and Research Unit said anyone who felt the tremor may fill a questionnaire on the following website.
