HSBC’s participation in Earth Hour last Saturday saved 80 kilos of greenhouse gas emissions, the bank said. Earth Hour aims to encourage business and households to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour at a pre appointed time.

Major cities and world landmarks plunged into darkness on Saturday between 8.30 and 9.30 p.m. (local time) in a symbolic energy-saving exercise. This global event seeks to raise awareness across the globe to help avert potentially devastating climate change.

Climate change is also affecting Malta. The winter of 2006/7 was the warmest since the Malta Meteorological Office started keeping records in 1922. June 2007 was the wettest on record.
