A drunk driver was yesterday handed a suspended jail term when he admitted to assaulting two police officers after he refused to take a breathalyser test.

Serbian Branisslav Stankovic, 33, of St Paul’s Bay, was stopped by the police in his hometown on Sunday at about 8 p.m. in a drunken state and was told to take a breathalyser test.

He refused, quarrelled with the policemen and then put up a fight, slightly injuring two officers.

During yesterday’s arraignment, Magistrate Antonio Mizzi asked him what happened and he admitted to having a couple of beers and getting drunk. Mr Stankovic pleaded guilty to assaulting the officers, drink driving, disobeying the officers and breaching the peace.

Magistrate Mizzi jailed him for a year suspended for one year, fined him €470 and suspended his driving licence for six months.
