So much guessing is going on as to how residents, visitors and delivery trucks will enter Valletta once City Gate is brought down for good. While this exercise should have been done way before Piano’s “masterpiece”, no one involved in the project seems to reply to any of the letters written about this subject. There are a lot of ifs and buts but no decisive answer.
Recently I was talking to someone involved in the Valletta local council and got the most ridiculous insight into a proposed option. Now read carefully and follow the directions: To get to Ordinance Street near the Embassy of the Order of St John, drive from Marsamxetto Road to St Mark Street, take a left into Old Bakery Street and then right up St John Street, right again into Strait Street and right again to Melita Street, crossing Old Bakery Street again but straight to Melita Street. Then up St Andrew Street and left into South Street then right again up Old Mint Street until you finally turn left into Ordinance Street and you’re home.
I suggest that everyone reading this letter print it and have a go. Then do it all over again with a delivery truck without knocking down all the balconies in St Andrew Street.
Why? Why do our politicians, including those elected as councillors, have to make our lives a living hell? Is it in their DNA?
Recently I saw a reply by Astrid Vella saying that the government was considering reopening Castille Place to access Valletta from South Street. I sincerely hope she is right.
